정원. 비스듬한

그 동안 공간의 특징적 요소들을 이용하여 설치의 형태로 작업을 해왔다. 특히 공간해석, 관객의 동선 고려, 미로, 일상의 노동력 등의 개념들을 통해 설치 작업과 정원 만들기를 연결시키며 전개해왔다.

<정원. 비스듬한>전시는 하늘광장갤러리의 기둥과 벽의 ‘비스듬한’ 공간의 특징을 적극적으로 이용하였다. 작업안에서는 다른 각도의 기둥들을 만들어 다양한 시선들이 나타난다. 실제기둥과 작품의 차이와 그 속에 교차하는 다른 시선들은 비스듬한 공간을 더욱 긴장감 있게 만든다. 비스듬한 것을 통해 균형을 잡아보고자 하는 작가의 시도도 함축되어 있다.

또한 이 전시는 느닷없이 펼쳐지는 오아시스처럼 잠깐 머물 수 있는 ‘정원’이 연상된다. 도시 안에서 만나는 정원은 화분, 자투리 땅, 넓게는 이 갤러리 공간처럼 쓰임새가 낯선 공간에 자리잡은 경우가 많다.
작업속에서는 투명한 기둥으로 공간 안의 공간을 만들어 ‘정원’의 의미로 공간을 점유하고자 했다.

<정원. 비스듬한>전시는 도심공간에서 우연히 만나는 정원처럼 자연스럽게 이끌리듯 설치작업 속으로 산책하기를 바란다. 더불어 그 속에 숨겨놓은 수수께끼 같은 각자의 어떤 의미를 찾아가기 바란다.

Uncanny Garden

Sungim Choi has been doing her installation art works with taking advantage of distinctive elements of spaces. Especially, she has linked her art works to the making of gardens through the concepts of space interpretation, viewers’ flow, a maze, and daily labor force.

For the exhibition entitled “Uncanny Garden,” Sungim utilized characteristic pillars and slanted walls of the Sky Plaza Gallery. Different-angled pillars in the installation
art represent various views. Differences between the actual pillars and the ones in the art work, and different views crossing in the work give the slanted space more tension, which implies the artist’s attempts to make a balance through slanted things.

This exhibition reminds you of a garden where you could relax for a while as if you were in an oasis unexpectedly unfolded before your eyes. Gardens you may encounter in the city are usually just plant or lower pots, a tiny-sized land, or an unfamiliar space, such as this Gallery. Through her installation work, Sungim intends to interpret the space as a garden by making a space within the space completed by transparent pillars.
