풍경을 본다는 것은 무엇일까? 사람의 눈은 이 세상을 그저 아무것도 아닌 것으로 보려 하지 않고 사물에 대한 의인적 체험을 통해 자기를 비추려 한다. 우리 안에 존재하는 풍경이 바로 세상의 풍경인 것이다. 땅끝마을이나 고향 혹은 남극이나 달 표면 같은 장소는 내 마음 속이 아니라면 어디에 있겠는가? 풍경이란 내가 창조하는 인상이다. 내 안에서 너를 여는 먼 곳이다. 어느 여름 밤, 저녁 해가 저물 무렵 나는 선선한 바람에 이끌려 산책에 나섰다. 감각이 분주하게 일어나는 골목길을 걷다가 불현듯 내 생의 모든 시간과 공간이 눈앞에서 한꺼번에 흘러가는 순간이 있었다. 동시에 내가 어쩌면 유령인지도 모르겠다는 느낌이 들었다. 모퉁이를 돌다 만난 검은 구멍에서 시원한 바람이 얼굴을 어루만지며 휘파람을 불었다. 잠시 그 앞에 한참을 서 있었다. 나는 절간과 같은 고립된 집이다. 그림자가 되어 수줍게 달아나는 유령들의 집이다. 나는 저물어 가는 황혼의 끝자락처럼 풍경 속 사건들 사이를 이리저리 헤맨다. 내 곁을 지나가는 행인들이 마치 나를 아는 것처럼 쳐다본다. 그러나 모두 낯선 얼굴들이다.
Artist’s Note
What does "watching sceneries" really mean to us? When we look at the world, we all tend to impart special meanings to things we see and reflect ourselves through personification. Therefore, the sceneries that exist in our minds are the sceneries we see in the world. The sceneries of the end of the earth, our hometowns, and the surface of the Moon are nowhere but inside our minds. The sceneries are manifestations of the impressions we create by ourselves. They are faraway places that exist in us. At sunset on a summer night, driven by the refreshing breezes, I went out for a stroll. I was walking down an alley that was filled with all different senses and emotions, and all of a sudden, I encountered a moment when all the times and places I had been through in my life stood still. At the same time, I felt like I might rather be a ghost there. As I turned a corner, a gust of wind from a dark opening gently touched my face and whistled to my ears, and I just stood there for a while. I'm an isolated house like a temple. I'm a house where ghosts turn into shadows and run away shyly. I linger around in the sceneries of the past like waning twilight. The passersby look at me as if we've met before, but all I see are strange faces.

정희정은 사진, 영상, 회화를 매체로 독특한 색감과 개성적인 화면 구성 능력, 쉽게 읽히지 않는 기호들을 시각화하는 작업을 통해 주로 서울이나 경기도의 주변부, 달동네나 산동네 등 중심에서 비껴간 풍경을 담는다. 이러한 작업들은 단순히 재현적 차원에서 사회적 이슈들을 제기한다기보다 일상성 속에서 은폐된 요소들을 가시화하면서 의미의 논리 속에 감각의 틈을 내고자 하는 시도들이다. 서울 경기지역에서 5회의 개인전을 가졌으며 2015년 경기도 미술관에서 <시간수집자>전 외 다수의 그룹전에 참여하였다. 2017년 서울국제뉴미디어페스티벌에서 <붉은 방>으로 관객구애상을 수상한 바 있다.
Jeong Hee Jeong depicts the sceneries of the areas out of downtowns including the surrounding areas of Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, and other hillside villages via photos, videos, and paintings by using her unique color arrangement and sense of composition, and visualizing the counterintuitive signs. She does not particularly try to bring up social issues by recalling them. Instead, her works are the results of her attempts to awake the senses in the midst of logic through visualizing the concealed elements in our daily lives. She held five times of private exhibitions in Seoul and Gyeonggi-do, and participated in several group exhibitions including Time Collector in the Gyeonggi Museum of Modern Art in 2015. She received the prize of the Audience Jury Award in the Seoul International New Media Festival with The Red Room in 2017.

정희정 작가의 <판타스마고리아(phantasmagoria)> 전과 연계한 '우리가 만드는 원더랜드'는 우리가 살아가는 도시 서울에 대한 경험과 기억을 나누는 전시연계 체험프로그램입니다. 각자가 경험한 서울, 혹은 꿈꾸는 서울을 다양한 방법으로 표현하여 하나의 거대한 지도로 완성합니다.
“Wonderland We Make” is a hands-on program connected with artist Jeong’s “phantasmagoria” exhibition. It provides a chance to share experiences and memories of Seoul, the city where we live. Participants are allowed to complete a huge map of Seoul each one has experienced or each one have dreamed of.
