Biophilia 바이오필리아
바이오필리아는 생명을 뜻하는 '바이오'와 사랑을 뜻하는 그리스어 '필리아'의 합성어다. 자연적으로 태생한 생명의 의미를 넘어서 기술적 혹은 정치적, 경제적 영향으로 탄생한 사회구성원 즉, 로봇, 이민자, 외국인 등과의 갈등과 피해를 최소화하고 공생 가능케 하고자 하는 염원을 ‘바이오필리아 Biophilia'를 통해 나타내고자 한다.
근 10여 년간 오스트리아와 영국, 한국을 오가며 생활해왔다. 급격하게 바뀌었던 환경과 문화 속에서 관찰할 수 있었던 계급, 인종, 종교, 성별 등 서로 다른 이해관계의 사람들, 집단들 간의 갈등과 차별이 있었고 이것은 나의 관심을 끌었다.
경쟁을 통한 차별로 이룬 성장은 더 이상 지속성을 가지고 있지 않다. 서울이란 도시는 그것으로 급속한 경제발전을 이루었지만 동시에 많은 사회적 문제와 부조리(차별, 빈부격차 등)를 안고 있다. 다양한 배경의 사람들이 이미 서울에 살고 있고 더 많은 다양한 사람들이 이곳으로 모이고 있다. 이렇게 다양한 생명체, 사회적 배경을 가진 이들이 사는 도시에서는 조화와 공존을 통한 삶만이 사회의 문제를 최소화하며 그들이 서로 공생하며 지낼 수 있는 사회적 틀과 인식을 만든다고 생각한다. 2015년부터 공존, 공생에 가치를 두고 오랫동안 상상해 왔던 세계들을 모아놓은 작품들이 전시[바이오필리아]를 통해 보여진다.
Biophilia
“Biophilia” is a combination of the words “Bio-,” which means “life,” and “-philia,” which means “love” in Greek. Through the exhibition “Biophilia,” Ahn depicts her wish to achieve a symbiotic relationship between local natives and newly appearing members in society, such as cyborgs, migrants, foreigners and the like, by diminishing the conflicts and hatred among them.
For almost 10 years, Ahn has travelled and worked back and forth in Austria, the U.K. and Korea. What caught her eyes the most during this period of the rapidly changing environment and cultures was growing hatred towards refugees and foreigners. Furthermore, she sensed the growing gap between different economic and political classes, races, religions, or genders.
Growth made by the discrimination and hierarchal system is no longer sustainable. Seoul had achieved rapid economic growth through it, however which brought many problems as well, such as discrimination and inequalities in the society. People having different backgrounds have already been living in Seoul and more and more people is gathering to Seoul. Ahn thinks that a life of coexistence and harmony is the only way to minimize the conflicts and hatred in society, to build a new social frame and to increase public understanding about the change.
At the exhibition “Biophilia,” Ahn introduces artworks depicting the world of co-existence she has imagined since 2015.

안보미는 2010년 오스트리아 비엔나 Q21 뮤지엄에 입주한 애니메이션 단체 Asifakeil 레지던시 프로그램 참여를 기점으로 작품활동을 시작했다. 2015년 커먼센터 '오늘의 살롱 2015', 2016년 오스트리아 도이치빌라 갤러리에서 열린 [올인 All In], 2018년 안양박물관 [낙원의 이편] 단체전 등에 참여하였다. 애니메이션, 회화, 설치, 벽화 등 여러 매체를 사용하여 도시, 미래, 기술발전과 피난, 여성 등과 같이 작가의 개인적인 서사로부터 시작되지만 사회적 이야기로 뻗어나가는 지점을 이야기한다.
Bomi Ahn started her art career in 2010 by participating in the Artist-in-Residence program of Asifakeil (Association Internationale du Film d’Animation) in Q21’s Electric Avenue in the MuseumsQuartier in Vienna, Austria, one of the largest arts and culture complexes. Since then, she had participated in “Today’s Salon 2015” held at Common Center, “All In” at Deutsche Villa Galerie in Austria in 2016, and “This Side of Paradise” at Anyang Museum in Korea in 2018. She uses diverse media of art, such as animation, painting, installation art, and mural, to express her social interests stemmed from her experiences and observation about metropolis, future, high-technology, refugees and living as a woman in a patriarchal society.

식물이 가진 건강한 힘을 예술적 방법으로 표현해보는 전시연계 체험 프로그램입니다.
다양한 식물과 허브잎 등 자연의 재료들을 블랜딩하여 나만의 식물 꼴라주 드로잉을 만들어봅니다.
“Biophilia: How to Understand Plants” by artist Ahn is an exhibition related program, in which children are allowed to observe plants with all five senses and express the strength of the plants in an artistic way. Participants will have a chance to make their own plant collage drawings by blending various leaves and herbs from the nature.
