서울시청 하늘광장 갤러리는 2021년 3월 29일부터 4월 23일까지 2020년 하늘광장 갤러리 공모선정작 전시 《물집도시 프로젝트》를 온라인 개최합니다.
《물집도시 프로젝트》는 도시를 둘러싼 우리의 삶에서 발견되는 다양한 형태의 오염을 포착하고 탐구하는 전시입니다. 구지은 작가는 2017년부터 울산과학기술원 사이언스월든 센터의 연구원으로서 학제간 협업을 통한 리서치와 커뮤니티 프로젝트를 진행해오고 있습니다.
작가는 수포와 같이 고립되고 소외된 개인의 집합체로서의 도시에 착안하고, 동시대 도시 공동체의 중층적 양상을 회화와 설치, 영상 등 다양한 매체를 활용하여 그려냅니다. 물집처럼 부풀어 오르는 도시의 병증과 오염들은 개인의 문제가 아닌, 우리 모두가 공유하는 다중의 경험입니다. 작가는 우리들을 연결하는 유형과 무형의 호흡에 집중하는데, 호흡을 통해 바이러스의 감염이 확산하듯 심리적 오염도 보이지 않는 호흡을 통해 이어지고 전파됩니다.
하지만 우리 서로가 고통과 소외만을 주고받는 것은 아닙니다. 노동 환경과 마음의 고통, 정신적 고립과 같은 도시의 삶을 가시화하고 있는 작가의 작업은 우리에게 스스로를 돌아보는 계기를 마련해 주는 한편 소통과 연대, 위로와 치유의 호흡을 전달합니다.
The Sky Plaza Gallery at Seoul City Hall will hold the online exhibition Blister City Project from March 29 to April 23, 2021.
The contest-winning Blister City Project is an exhibition that captures and explores various forms of pollutions found in our lives in cities. Since 2017, artist Jieun Gu has been working on research and community projects through interdisciplinary collaboration as a researcher at the Science Walden Center of the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology.
Gu interprets a city as a collective of isolated and marginalized blister-like individuals and draws multi-level aspects of the contemporary urban community using various media, such as paintings, installations, and video clips. The blister-like diseases and pollutions of cities are not only personal problems but also multiple experiences that we all share. She focuses both on tangible and intangible breathing that connects us. Just as viruses spread through breathing, psychological contamination continues and spreads through invisible breathing.
However, we are not just exchanging pains and alienations. The works of the artist visualize a life in cities as labor-related mental burdens, heartaches, and a sense of isolation. They provide us with an opportunity to look back on ourselves. At the same time, they also send a message of communication, solidarity, comfort, and healing.
〈물집도시 프로젝트〉는 동시대의 물리적, 심리적 오염에서 파생되는 사회문제 속에서 자원순환의 가치와 소외된 대상에 관한 관심으로 시작되었다. 물집과 수포라는 뜻을 지닌 ‘Blister’는 볼록하게 돌출된 형상으로 알약, 장난감, 생활용품 등의 투명 플라스틱 포장재(blister-pack)로 일상 속에서 익숙하게 쓰여왔다. 부풀어 올라 터지기 쉬운 물집과 도시의 소비 산물을 감싼 플라스틱 포장재 사이에서 파생되는 ‘감염’과 ‘오염’의 가변적인 순환 구조에 집중한다.
코로나19로 인한 비대면 생활방식과 AI가 노동을 대체하고 데이터가 사회를 이끌어가는 디지털 사회의 급격한 변화 속에서 우리는 의미화되지 못한 채 사라지고 소외되는 대상들을 만난다. 바이러스로 인한 국가적 팬데믹 상황은 예측할 수 없는 변화로 물리적 국경의 경계는 무력해졌고 사회적 거리두기 현상들로 개개인이 느끼는 심리적 고립감과 소외감은 공동의 경험으로 확장되었다. 나는 불안정한 현재를 살아가는 현대인들이 모인 곳을 ‘물집도시(Blister City)’라고 정의한다.
부재와 결핍의 시대 속에서 유연하게 연대할 수 있는 지속가능한 공동체와 새로운 사회관계 시스템을 가설하기 위한 시도로서 자본과 교환가치로 환원되지 않는 가치들, 데이터로 환원되지 않는 인간 내면의 사각지대와 다양한 환경 오염원들을 시각화하여 소통의 순환체계를 구축하고자 한다.

The Blister City Project began with my interest in the value of resource recirculation and marginalized objects in social problems caused by physical and psychological contaminations. The word "blister" means a small pocket of body fluid within the upper layers of the skin. Most blisters curve outwards in the middle. That is why we also use the word "blister-pack" to indicate a pre-formed transparent plastic packaging used for medical pills, toys, and small consumer goods. The Blister City Project focuses on a changeable circulation structure of "infection" and "contamination," produced from swollen blisters that are prone to burst and plastic packaging that packs up products of consumption in a city.
Amid the contactless lifestyle caused by COVID-19 and the drastically changing digital society in which artificial intelligence (AI) replaces manual labor and data leads the society, we encounter objects that fail to be realized. They disappear and are marginalized. The COVID-19 pandemic has brought about unpredictable changes, making national physical boundaries become powerless. The social distancing restriction has made individuals have feelings of psychological alienation and isolation. These feelings have been expanded into communal experiences. I define the place where modern people gather and live in this unstable present as a "Blister City."
In an attempt to create a sustainable community and a new social relations system that can be flexibly united in the age of absence and scarcity, I try to build up a circular communication system by visualizing values that cannot be changeable into capital and exchange values, blind spots of the human mind, and various environmental pollutants that are not turned into data.

구지은 작가는 동시대 사회문제에 관한 지속가능한 대안을 가설하고 현실과 융합하는 지점에 집중하여 회화, 설치, 프로젝트 작업을 병행하고 있다. 2017년부터 울산과학기술원(UNIST) 사이언스월든(SCIENCE WALDEN) 센터의 과학&예술 융합 프로젝트 연구원으로 합류하여 현재까지 과학, 공학, 인문학 등 다양한 영역 간의 협업을 통한 대안적 사회 시스템과 새로운 도시 공동체 모델의 연구를 진행 중이다.
Artist Jieun Gu has set up sustainable alternatives to contemporary social problems and focused on where the alternatives and the reality are converged while working on paintings, installations, and project-based works. She joined the Science Walden Center at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) in 2017 as a researcher for science and arts convergence projects. Since then, she has studied alternative social systems and new urban community models through collaborations with diverse areas, such as science, engineering, and humanities.
