코드화된 공간 Coded Space
코드화된 공간(Coded Space) 이라는 주제로 열리는 이번 전시는 강은혜 작가가 지난 몇 년간 미국 필라델피아, 뉴욕, 뉴저지, 볼티모어, 미시간 등지에서 해왔던 한글을 이용한 기하학적인 패턴 설치작업들을 기록한 사진과 영상물에 대한 아카이빙 형식의 전시이다. 미국과 유럽에서 작업활동을 하면서, 외국인들에게는 한글 형상을 이용한 패턴이 언어가 아닌 기하학적이고 추상적인 시각예술로서 받아들여지고, 읽을 수는 없지만 어떤 의미와 메세지를 담고 있는 기하학적 패턴이 설치된 공간 안에서 관람객들이 흥미로워하고 즐기는 모습을 보았다. 그러한 경험들을 통하여, 앞으로 한글이 한국에서 뿐만 아니라 세계적으로도 추상예술분야, 인테리어 디자인 분야 등 다방면에서 무한한 가능성과 잠재력을 가지고 있다는 확신을 가지게 되었다. 한글이 지닌 기하학적인 아름다움은 비율과 나눔의 개념이 적용되어 여러 건축요소와 접목될 수 있기 때문에, 작가는 추상예술로서 기하학적인 한글을 발전시켜 나가고 싶다는 꿈을 가지고 작업을 해나가고 있다. 한글이 언어로서의 우수성 뿐만 아니라, 시각적으로 기하학적인 추상미술의 한 형태로서, 순수조형 소재로서 표현 가능성을 접할 수 있는 기회가 되기를 바란다.
With the theme of "Coded Space", this exhibition is an archive-style display of photos and video clips that chronicle the geometric pattern installation work using Hangeul, or Korean alphabet, which Kang has done over the past few years in Philadelphia, New York, New Jersey, Baltimore and Michigan. When working in the U.S. and Europe, she saw visitors enjoying exhibition spaces where geometric patterns using Hangeul were installed. They regarded the patterns as geometric and abstract visual arts, not foreign letters, while thinking the patterns contain a certain of meanings and messages even though they cannot read it. Through these experiences, Kang has become convinced that Hangeul has unlimited possibilities and potentials not only in Korea but also globally in abstract arts and interior design. Thinking that the geometric beauty of the Korean letters can be combined with various architectural elements by applying the concept of ratio and sharing, she is working with a dream of developing Hangeul geometrically as an abstract art. This exhibition will be an opportunity for visitors to see Hangeul not only as the excellent letters, but also its possibility of being used as a form of visually geometric abstract art.
강은혜 Eun Hye Kang
설치작가 강은혜(1982~)는 미국 메릴랜드 예술대학교에서 BFA, 크랜브룩 아카데미 오브 아트에서 MFA를 취득하였고, 홍익대학교 대학원에서 섬유미술 전공으로 박사과정을 수료하였다. 대학원 졸업 후 브루클린 아트 스페이스, 버몬트 스튜디오 센터에서 레지던시를 했다. 이후, 뉴욕에서 본격적으로 설치작가로 활동하며 개인전과 다수의 단체전에 참여하였다. 주프랑스 대사관 한국문화원 정기전시 공모 <2015-2016년 주목할 만한 작가>에 선정되어 프랑스 파리에서 개인전을 하였고, 2017년에는 주워싱턴DC 한국문화원에서 개인전을 하였다. 영은미술관 창작스튜디오, 경기창작센터, 팔복예술공장 등에서 레지던시 작가로 작품활동을 해오고 있다.
Installation artist Eun Hye Kang received her MFA from Cranbrook Academy of Art after she graduated with a BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art and completed the doctoral course in fiber art from the graduate school of Hongik University. After graduation from the graduate school, Kang participated in the residency at the Brooklyn Art Space and Vermont Studio Center. Since then, as a New York-based installation artist, she participated in several solo and group exhibitions. Kang was selected as one of the artists at the 2015-2016 Notable Artists Award by the Korean Cultural Center in France, and had a solo exhibition in Paris, France; and had a solo exhibition at the Korean Cultural Center in Washington D.C. in 2017. She is participating in the residency at the Youngeun Museum of Contemporary Art’s Creation Studio, Gyeonggi Creation Center, and the Factory of Comtemporary Arts in Palbok.

강은혜 작가의 <코드화된 공간(Coded Space)> 전과 연계한 '나만의 한글 패턴 에코백 만들기'는 한글의 기하학적 추상성에 대한 가능성을 직접 경험할 수 있는 전시연계 체험프로그램입니다. 한글을 새로운 시각으로 바라보고 나만의 감각으로 새롭게 표현해봅니다.
As the connected program of installation artist Kang’s exhibition "Coded Space," "Making My Own Hangeul-patterned Eco-bag" allows participants to have an hands-on experience about possibilities of the geometric abstractness of Hangeul. Participants will be able to have a new look at Hangeul and express it with their own sensibility.
